A major lorry fire on the A30 near Exeter caused significant disruption on Friday afternoon, prompting emergency road closures and lengthy traffic delays as firefighters and emergency services responded to the incident.
The fire was first reported at approximately 1:15 p.m. on the eastbound carriageway of the A30 near Exeter. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a heavy goods vehicle engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke rising high into the sky and visible from surrounding areas.
Emergency services quickly attended the scene to tackle the blaze, secure the area, and protect motorists traveling along one of Devon’s busiest routes. Traffic management measures were implemented as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control and assess the safety of the roadway.
Road Closures and Traffic Disruption
According to traffic monitoring services, the A30 was initially closed in both directions between Woodleigh Junction at Tedburn St. Mary and the A377 Alphington Junction near Ide.
The closures resulted in long queues as vehicles were brought to a standstill while emergency crews carried out firefighting operations.
Later updates confirmed that the westbound carriageway had reopened, allowing some traffic to resume. However, the eastbound side remained closed while crews continued to deal with the incident and ensure the road was safe for reopening.
Motorists were advised to expect substantial delays and consider alternative routes where possible.
Smoke Visible Across the Area
Images and video shared by witnesses showed dense black smoke billowing from the burning lorry, creating a dramatic scene that could be seen from a considerable distance.
The smoke plume attracted the attention of drivers and nearby residents, while emergency personnel worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding the cause of the fire or whether anyone sustained injuries.
Additional Traffic Issues on the A30
The lorry fire was not the only incident affecting travel across Devon.
Traffic reports also noted:
- One lane closed on the westbound A30 between Sourton Cross and the A388 near Launceston because of a broken-down vehicle.
- Very slow-moving traffic on the eastbound Okehampton Bypass due to another vehicle breakdown near Meldon Junction and Okehampton Services.
These separate incidents added to travel difficulties for motorists using the A30 throughout the afternoon.

Drivers traveling through the area were encouraged to slow down near the incident, follow directions from emergency personnel, and seek alternative routes where practical until the affected section of the A30 fully reopened.
Emergency crews remained on scene working to extinguish the fire, clear the damaged vehicle, and inspect the carriageway for any damage before traffic could safely return to normal.
